Israel (aka Jacob) is told by God that he shouldn’t be afraid to go to Egypt. So he packs up his family and belongings and sets off.
Here we are given another accounting of Jacob’s family to let us know who is going with him to Goshen.
Joseph tells them that he will talk to the Pharaoh and explain that they are shepherds, which will allow them to settle in Goshen. Egypt doesn’t like shepherds, apparently. Jacob feels he is now ready to die.
