Genesis 31

Genesis 31

Are any of God’s chosen people even slightly decent? Is there an honest thought in their heads?

Laban’s sons are understandably upset that Jacob now has all the wealth, and Laban isn’t all that happy either. God tells Jacob to go back to the land of his father. Leah and Rachel are fine with it, as long as they get something of what was their father’s. An interesting bit is where they admit they were sold. Maybe this is just metaphor in relation to the work Jacob did for Laban, but selling humans to each other doesn’t seem like an odd concept to these people.

Jacob secretly loads up his family and his flock and heads out, and Rachel stole her father’s household gods. Laban gives chase, but God warns him about speaking to Jacob.

When Laban catches up he accuses Jacob of taking his daughters and his stuff. Jacob lets him search through their belongings, but Rachel uses her period as an excuse to hide the stolen gods. Finally Jacob gets indignant at having his stuff search and accuses Laban of changing his wages and refusing to let him go home. He says that if it wasn’t for his God, Laban would have sent him away poor.

Laban and Jacob make a covenant. about being nice to each other and they go on their way.

I’m really failing to see how this isn’t just stories of shitty people being shitty to each other… plus GOD!.
